How does loft insulation work?

Heat rises and escapes through your roof, but loft insulation reduces the amount of heat that passes through. Most loft insulation materials work by preventing the movement of heated air through the material.

Loft insulation material has fibres which trap air within it. For the material to be effective, the weave must not be overstretched or compressed since this could damage the structure that traps the air.

By either laying rolled-out pieces of fibreglass or wool insulation directly onto the base of your loft or blowing loose-fill insulation material in place, a layer of insulation traps heat inside the rooms below your loft.
