What is cavity wall insulation?

  1. Cavity insulation is known for being one of the best and most affordable ways to help UK homesโ€™ energy efficiency, specifically by reducing heat loss through walls.
  2. Most houses in the UK are either constructed with cavity walls or solid walls. The distinct difference between whether you have cavity walls or solid walls is whether your walls have two layers with a gap or โ€˜cavityโ€™ between them.
  3. While we encourage a cavity insulation expert to check more thoroughly, an easy way to check what type of walls you have is whether the building of your home took place before or after the 1920s.
  • If built before the 1920s, we can presume your home has solid walls, and you wouldnโ€™t be able to add insulation.
  • On the other hand, if built after the 1920s, itโ€™s more likely that it has cavity walls, and you can add insulation.

Bonded bead cavity wall insulation

When you opt for cavity wall insulation, we fill the air space in your walls with a special type of insulation material that prevents heat transfer. We can fill these spaces with either mineral wool, cavity foam or bonded beads.

Bonded bead insulation involves injecting polystyrene beads into the cavity in your walls using an approved injection system. This method is more breathable and cost-effective than others.

The bonded beads are produced to a certain size and are air-blown carefully to ensure a complete fill of the cavity wall area.

After insulation, the bead filling in the cavity will continue to function as an efficient insulator for the life span of the structure and won’t require further maintenance.
